Highland Park, sometimes referred to as the “bubble”, is a 2.2-square-mile residential island city surrounded by Dallas on the south, east, and west, and University Park on the north. Together, they comprise the Park Cities, an enclave of Dallas. People from Highland Park are sometimes referred to as “Parkies.” The land in Highland Park was first purchased by a group of Philadelphia investors In 1889,  intending to develop the land along Turtle Creek as an area of exclusive housing modeled after the style of parkland housing in Philadelphia.

Brief History

During the panic of 1893, the Dallas land boom was destroyed, and the development that was first started by the Philadelphia investors had ended.  However, not all was lost,  as horse breeding sustained growth in the area, and one breeding farm in particular, Lomo Alto Horse Farm, was a success. During the 1890’s, Exall Lake was another contributing factor to the area’s survival, and was a  favorite picnic destination for residents and visitors. There was an abundance of bass and perch stocked in it, and a steamboat also operated on it.

In 1906, a man named John Armstrong bought the land for a residential development under the name of Highland Park. Armstrong gave Highland Park its name because of its location on a higher elevated tract of land overlooking downtown Dallas.  Today, Highland Park is located in central Dallas County, with a population of 8,564 as of  the 2010 census. It’s located between the Dallas North Tollway and U.S. Route 75, about 4 miles north of Downtown Dallas.
