Welcome to Lakeway
Lakeway is a small community of 12,000 residents on Lake Travis, five miles west of Mansfield Dam in Travis County. Lakeway’s merger began in 1974 when the people voted to incorporate with the City of Austin, and so the lush green 1,200-acre village of Lakeway became part of the larger Austin metropolitan area. The name ‘Lakeway ‘is a variant of the word fairway, and so named because of the nearby Gulfmont’s Fairway Motor Hotel which overlooked the fairway of the golf course.
Acting as a home rule city, the city officials adopted a city charter, which was approved by the voters in an election in May 1990 and thereby establishing the City of Lakeway as a self-governing municipality. The City of Lakeway now operates as a council-manager form of government with the elected officials consisting of a mayor and six council members. The City of Lakeway is served by the Lake Travis Independent School District and includes six elementary schools and two middle schools located in unincorporated areas outside of Lakeway . All of Lakeway is zoned to Lake Travis High School.
